Gavorrano Located on the slope of the Monte Calvo and until a few decades ago it was an important mining village. Only 15 to 20 km to the sea. The province Grosseto is often associated with the landscape of the Maremma. The Parco Naturale Regionale della Maremma was founded in 1975. It embraces the Monti dell'Uccellina, the marshes Trappola and Ombrone, the pine forest of Alberese and last but not least the swathe of land where the horses and buffalos of the Maremma are living in wilderness. An area with multiple eco-systems with a great importance for the conservation of plant and animal species which have a perfect habitat here. On marked pathways the park can be visited with a guide, on foot or on the back of a horse. Bathing resorts Along the 130 km coast of Grosseto you find numerous bathing resorts. Coming from north you enter the gulf of Follonica, where rock and sand coasts alternate. Sand coasts are mostly found in the central part and in the south. Here there are also the most interesting locations like for instance Follonica, a pleasant village for summer guests, and futher south Punta Ala, a holiday resort with a modern yacht harbour. Here in the south the landscape is characterised by mainly lowlands with sand beaches. The most famous village here is Castiglione della Pescaia with a beautiful historic centre located on a bank, a beach and a yacht harbour. In the province of Grosseto there are many villages with sightseeings interesting for their archaeology and art. You can find prehistoric settlements in this area. Findings prove the existence of the Etruscan civilization already in the 8th century B.C. Close-by there are the remains of two of the most ancient and powerful Etruscan towns, Roselle and Vetulonia. Pure recreation! The nature of the province and the coverage of the whole area offer many possibilities for hiking, horse riding and trekking. Roccastrada, a village in the heart of the province, is starting point of a wide net of more than 150 km pathways leading through this area full of natural beauty and historic locations. Farmhouses along the routes invite to a pleasant break where you can feel real hospitality and try the delicious specialities of the region.
